WB William Alexander Mitchell - 1895
In continuing with last week's theme, let's meet our next mystery... WB William Alexander Mitchell, 1895.
William Alexander Mitchell was born on November 29, 1856, and was the son of Ervin Alexander Mitchell and Mary A. Terrell Mitchell.
Little to nothing is known of William A. Mitchell's early life. In 1884, he married Miss Mary L. Randall, and during their marriage, they had at least seven children.
William Alexander Mitchell petitioned Lavonia Lodge No. 241, F&AM on May 23, 1890 and was elected to receive the Degrees of Masonry on June 20, 1890. He was Initiated on June 27 and Passed on July 25. Bro. W.A. Mitchell was Raised to the Sublime Degree of Master Mason on August 22, 1890, in what appears to have been a marathon business meeting, in which Petitions were received, committees appointed, proficiencies were returned on two separate degrees, Bro. J.B.D. McWhorter (he'll come up again in a few weeks) was Initiated, and Bros. Mitchell and A.D. Echols were Raised.
WB Mitchell was elected to succeed WB Samuel Warren Lester, who died while in office (December 1894), and served the Lodge faithfully for many years and in many roles.
WB William Alexander Mitchell was a businessman, banker, and appears to have served as the City Manager of Gainesville, Georgia many years later. WB and Mrs. Mitchell had a lovely home in Gainesville, where he spent a portion of his time, frequently returning to Martin, Georgia to oversee his property and businesses.
WB W. A. Mitchell died on November 5, 1935, and was buried at what is now the Community Cemetery in Martin, Georgia.
